Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
